Dental crowns in West Bridgford

Dental Crowns at Hilton Dental Clinic

A crown, sometimes known as a ‘cap’, is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it stronger. They can be made of porcelain, gold, or a combination of these materials, and help to restore the shape and health of your natural tooth. Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling.

The benefits of dental crowns

  • Strengthens remaining structure of damaged teeth
  • Protects a tooth that has been weakened by decay
  • Natural-looking, minimally invasive dental restoration
  • Functions like a real tooth to make chewing easy
  • Can improve the shape, shade, and alignment of teeth

Dental crown treatment process

We’ll have an initial consultation with you to discuss your smile goals, and create a unique treatment plan to start your journey to a beautiful smile.

In most cases, having a dental crown fitted will take place across two appointments, because your crown needs to be made in a dental laboratory.

The treatment process:‍

  1. We start by taking an impression of the tooth that needs to be restored, which gets sent off to the dental laboratory so your crown can be made. The decayed tooth material is removed with a dental drill, and a temporary crown may be fitted in the meantime.
  2. Your crown is manufactured in the dental lab from specialist materials – either porcelain or a combination of metal and porcelain – which is designed to fit your tooth precisely, and match the shape and colour of its neighbouring teeth.
  3. Once your crown is ready, you’ll come back in and we’ll prepare the tooth for the crown to be fitted securely on top. We do this by using a very strong dental bond to glue the crown in place, making sure it matches your other teeth, and is a snug, secure fit.

Life benefits of dental crowns

  • You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth
  • You may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it
  • It may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

Dental Crowns FAQs

What is a dental crown and when is it needed?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. It’s often used after large fillings, decay, or root canal treatment to restore strength and function.

How long do dental crowns last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental crowns can last anywhere between 10 to 15 years or longer, depending on the material used and your dental habits.

Does getting a dental crown hurt?

Not at all. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable. You may feel some mild sensitivity afterwards, but this usually settles quickly.
