After a tooth has been removed, the healed jaw bone may be too thin to place a dental implant. In some cases, the bone can be expanded to fit an implant, but if this isn’t possible or if the facial aesthetics would be compromised, bone grafting is a solution.
This involves taking bone from another part of the mouth, such as the chin or back of the jaw, and fusing it onto the site where the dental implant is to be placed. The procedure usually takes 2-4 months to heal properly before the implant can then be placed.
Alternatively, guided bone regeneration (GBR) can be used, which involves the placement of a membrane which separates the overlying gum from the bone, and over a period of months allows the formation of new bone in the space that has been created. Bone particles are often used which act like a scaffold, allowing your own bone cells to grow within them, forming new bone. Although an innovative technique, it often takes longer than bone grafting to generate enough bone for implant placement.
Another consideration is the quantity of gum tissue at the proposed implant site. If there’s not enough gum present, a small graft of gum can be taken from the palate in a small and simple procedure to ensure a well functioning implant with a natural aesthetic profile.
Sinuses are cavities inside the structure of our skull. When we lose a tooth, the bone around the root area starts to recede, which can lead to the sinus expanding into the tooth root area.
This means there may not be sufficient bone to support a dental implant, however special material can be inserted to encourage bone regrowth and ‘lift’ the sinus. Over time, the bone will re-grow, providing enough bone to support the Implant.
This patient had failing upper teeth which required removal and were causing him pain. He wanted teeth that were supported by implants to restore his smile and to allow him to chew and eat without any concern. We provided him with a Full Mouth Bridge of twelve teeth on six implants. The patient was delighted with the result and achieved his desired outcome of being able to chew and eat as normal.
This patient came in with ill-fitting upper and lower dentures, and she was unhappy with their overall appearance, coupled with the fact that she was unable to chew effectively. Her new upper and lower overdentures grip onto her implants, providing excellent aesthetics and vastly improved function. This allowed the patient to have a more natural bite and to chew effectively like she would with natural teeth. She loves her elegant and natural looking smile and is very thrilled with the outcome.
This patient had poorly fitted upper and lower full dentures. He could not eat as the lower denture was very loose. With a new lower implant retained denture, he now has a denture with vastly improved function and a new smile. The aesthetics are excellent, as is his new bite.
This patient had seven missing teeth and wanted to refrain from wearing a denture. We put a temporary bridge in place which allowed us to make sure it was the right look for her and to check her bite. 10 years later, the outcome remains excellent, showing off a natural gum line and a smile that the patient was delighted with.
This patient had a single missing tooth that needed replacement. After inserting a temporary tooth for us to assess the look and bite of the replacement, we were able to give her a new smile, showing off the natural look she was hoping for. It’s almost impossible to tell she’s had a dental implant fitted.
Bone grafting is used when there isn’t enough healthy jawbone to support a dental implant. This may occur due to bone loss after tooth removal, trauma, or long-term gum disease. A bone graft helps rebuild the area and create a stable foundation for your implant.
Bone grafting involves transplanting bone (often from your jaw) to the implant site. GBR, on the other hand, uses a membrane and bone particles to stimulate natural bone growth over time. GBR is a slower process but can be ideal in certain clinical situations.
A sinus lift is required when the upper jaw doesn’t have enough bone height for an implant due to sinus expansion. A special grafting material is placed to ‘lift’ the sinus floor and encourage new bone growth, creating space to place an implant securely.
Includes a comprehensive dental exam, X-rays, and a routine hygiene clean performed by the dentist. A great way to get started on your journey to a healthier smile.
